Background: Prolonged QT interval on the surface electrocardiogram (ECG) is known to be associated with arrhythmias, coronary heart disease, and sudden cardiac death. Increased QT dispersion has also been related to arrhythymias which are more frequent in the elderly.
Acquired long QT syndrome describes pathologic excessive prolongation of the QT interval, upon exposure to an environmental stressor, with reversion back to normal following removal of the stressor.
